On Friday we took a tour of the Rogers Centre. It was a fun tour that gave us access to the field and some sky boxes and various off limit areas.
Over the course of the hour we learned some interesting facts:
The naming of the SkyDome was won by a young women in 1986 and as a prize she was given two seats for life behind home plate for every event at the SkyDome not just baseball and football.
Annual cost to open the roof is only $2000.00 a year no matter how many times they open it.
Players don’t like the AstroTurff, so much so that some players will not sign with the Jays for this reason alone. The only reason they don’t have real grass is the Argos football field. In 2016 the Argos may find another field.
WrestleMania 18 had the largest attendance with a whopping 70,000 people to watch the match between Hulk Hogan and The Rock. The picture above is a shot from the highest point in the stands. The upper tier of seats is the steepest out of any stadium in North America.
It costs 10k to rent the field out for two hours. Sicks kids frequently has sleep overs at centre field to watch movies on one of the largest indoor screen in the world.
No baseball has ever been hit out of the stadium or past the second level of seats. The longest home run in the stadium was 512ft.
With inflation cost to build stadium was 850 million.
The hotel in the SkyDome charges $600 a night if there is game and $300 if there is no game. During the 1993 world series people paid $1500.00 for a single night. While we are on the topic of the hotel, there has been 600 incidents at the stadium hotel of couples having sex in plain view of thousands of fans, as well as 17 incidents of men getting thrown out for masturbating at the window.
Well we can end the facts with that one.
